Montreal-based information security firm In Fidem is offering courses for learning safer programming practices.
Together with Aspect Security, In Fidem offers training in safe programming practices. The next session, scheduled for early June, is called "Secure Coding for .NET". According to In Fidem, there are "five good reasons to participate" in the training:
  • "Main security pitfalls. Learn about best practices for preventing vulnerabilities, and know how to identify the most common errors.
  • Pragmatic approach on Web testing tools. Perform exercises, analyses, and tests in a real on-line Web environment, using tools like WebGoat and Stinger.
  • Save time and money. Prevent losses caused by vulnerabilities and post-development corrections.
  • Recognized methodology and expertise. Our training follows the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) methodology principles.
  • Exclusive offer in Quebec. For the first time in Quebec, benefit from proven training given by an expert in application security."
In Fidem's associate Aspect Security is actually a founding OWASP Member and supports several OWASP projects. The Webgoat and Stinger tools used in the training have also been developed by Aspect Security.

The Secure Coding for .NET Course "raises developer awareness of application security issues and provides examples of 'what to do' and 'what not to do'," according to Aspect Security's course outline. It is for both ASP and C# programming languages. This three-day training will cover several aspects of Web development, teaching how to safely use tools such as HTTP, databases and XML. The training will also include hands-on programming labs and testing exercises.

The course will take place from June 8th to 10th 2010 in Montreal. You can register by email or by phone (514 847-3664). Those three days will focus on secure programming of .NET applications, but future training sessions will touch other languages, starting with Java this fall, according to In Fidem.

By implementing security elements straight into the application's design, one makes sure to eliminate vulnerabilities at the source. Thus, Web applications developers are greatly encouraged to take this course in order to, hopefully, help making the Internet a bit safer every day.
